Sometimes I just can't help myself, and self-striping yarn is one of those times. My love affair is relatively new, starting back in May of last year when I broke down and got myself some koigu at the local yarn shop. I knit up a quick stockinette cap for Nest: Maine, and have spent the last seven months jonesing for more.
Lucky me, I got a gift certificate to said yarn shop for Christmas, and so I was able to pick up a few more skeins of self-striping yarn to knit through! This time I got superwash wool, and will be donating these hats to Hats For Sailors.
Since making these two hats I've had visions of an army of self-striped hats -- for the shop, donated to every organization I can think of, gracing the heads of every single person I know. I love how easy yarn like this makes it. Cast on, ribbing for a few inches, and then .... then you just knit. And knit. And knit.
Many knitters don't enjoy this sort of mindless knitting, but I find it so envigorating. Maybe it's everything else I've got on my plate right now, but watching a hat take shape (gorgeous shape!) with little to no work on my part is a glorious thing!
I'm not abandoning cables and patterning and all the stuff that makes knitting exciting here, I'm just saying next time I have a spare $10 laying around, I'm picking up some Liberty Wool.

Don't you just LOVE Liberty Wool!!! I've made a hat out of it and want more. So soft and lush and the color combinations are beautiful!
